Dreadnought built for speed and readiness

Dreadnought's rapid construction used proven turbines, available 12-inch guns, and an armoured-cruiser-derived hull to seize a strategic lead.

Notes

The Royal Navy wanted the political and strategic value of being first, so it chose components that were advanced yet available and reliable. Turbines allowed battleship speed without demanding an unproven machinery arrangement, while existing 12-inch guns and a familiar hull layout reduced delay. The designers declined potentially more advanced guns and a superfiring layout because testing and redesign would surrender time. The result was not a lack of ambition; it was a procurement choice to make a capable all-big-gun ship ready before potential rivals could claim the initiative.
