Why one Dreadnought left Britain's lead catchable

The launch of HMS Dreadnought reset battleship competition, but building only one immediately gave rivals time to imagine that they could catch Britain.

Notes

HMS Dreadnought was both dominant and conspicuous within a fleet of slower pre-dreadnoughts. In one counterfactual, an opening batch of four Dreadnoughts and four Invincible-class battlecruisers would have made the British lead much harder to challenge. Building one revolutionary ship and then waiting allowed Germany to believe that matching British construction might still be possible. Shipbuilding tempo turns a technical breakthrough into a durable force advantage, which gives procurement speed a direct role in deterrence.
