Chapter · 31:23-33:32

HMS Drake and the work of naval presence

Jellicoe's final personal ship command joined port visits, diplomacy, maritime security, and the rare freedom to run a ship without a flag officer aboard.

Notes

HMS Drake was Jellicoe's last personal ship command and took him to the North America and West Indies Station. Her duties included port visits, diplomatic signaling, security presence, protection of maritime trade, and relationship building. Jellicoe appears to have been effective at this less dramatic but institutionally important work. Unlike Centurion, Drake did not constantly place a senior flag officer and separate staff responsibilities over him. The posting therefore gave Jellicoe a comparatively peaceful opportunity to settle into the direct command of his own ship.
