Dowding, Park, and jungle preparation in Malaya

A stronger Far Eastern command could bring experienced air leaders and earlier preparation for jungle fighting, although the proposed organization remains disputed.

Notes

The proposed command could also draw on Dowding and Keith Park after their removal from their earlier posts. Sending them to Far Eastern air appointments would bring experienced leadership to the defense of Malaya, while Park is also considered for Malta. Keyes's work with commandos and combined operations suggests a way to prepare units for jungle and behind-the-lines fighting. Alex Clarke envisages a Chindit-like force while resources remained scarce, whereas Fleet expects a more regular organization than the historically ad hoc Chindits. Only a year would be available after an appointment in 1940, and the force would have to begin with local resources. The argument depends on Japanese logistics being close to their limit when Singapore fell, so additional resistance could disrupt the advance.
