Why replacing Doorman would not fix the Java Sea force

Better leadership could help at Java Sea, but staff weakness, coalition complexity, and inadequate heavy ships constrained any commander.

Notes

Cunningham was a commander who understood when naval strategy required action and when to pull his punches. Doorman, however, lacked a suitable staff for a diverse multinational force and did not possess the firepower needed for his mission. Dutch battlecruisers, Repulse, Prince of Wales, or a comparable heavy unit would change the command problem more than a name alone. The passage warns against explaining a failed coalition operation solely through its admiral.
