The Bank Line merchant vessel was built in the 1920s, captured by the German raider *Atlantis* in January 1941, and sent to France. Renamed *Doggerbank*, she laid mines off South America before sailing to Japan. There she embarked survivors from two other German ships lost to fire in Yokohama. Her return voyage ended in friendly fire when U-43 torpedoed her in the South Atlantic. Only one man survived.
