Chapter ยท 1:47-3:15

Using Dogger Bank to trace centuries of naval change

The 1696 action opens a series that uses Dogger Bank to show how fleets, weapons, and naval combat changed over time.

Notes

Dogger Bank provides a useful chronological thread through naval history. The series confines itself to actions carrying the Dogger Bank name, even though Camperdown, Jutland, and other nearby North Sea battles could support a wider comparison. It also includes the 1904 Dogger Bank incident, in which the Russian fleet fired without a hostile naval opponent. The 1696 French attack on a Dutch convoy becomes the starting point for comparing very different forms of maritime violence across the following centuries.
