Chapter · 10:35-13:44

Dodecanese commanders choose resistance

Two Italian officers in the Dodecanese resisted the German-backed rump state after Italy changed sides, then refused escape when it would endanger their escort.

Notes

The video broadens from Riccardi to two competent officers caught in the Dodecanese after Mussolini's fall and the Italian armistice. Both had previously tested the Royal Navy in combat, even though the British ultimately prevailed. Faced with their former German allies, they chose to fight rather than join the German-backed Italian rump state, then were captured and subjected to show trials that branded them traitors. Their refusal to escape during an Allied air raid is presented as an act of responsibility: they accepted their likely execution rather than expose the young escort officer to death or reprisals in their place.
