Reading plans against engineering evidence

Official papers describe intended compromises, while the ships themselves can reveal different choices made during design and construction.

Notes

Clarke relates his differences with Andrew Field partly to the methods each brings to naval history. Both use documents, but his family's engineering background and his experience teaching engineering history, encourages close attention to the compromises embodied in ships. Written descriptions of a design decision can differ from the choices actually implemented. Comparing the two therefore means asking why the ship embodies a different compromise from the one discussed on paper. This methodological difference helps explain respectful disagreement between historians who value the same research.
