Dock capacity shapes practical ship size

Repair spaces sized for ships of roughly 15,000 to 20,000 tons made that range especially efficient for Royal Navy force design.

Notes

Dock capacity shaped warship design. Royal Navy facilities built to handle hulls of roughly 15,000 to 20,000 tons could support ships in that band very efficiently. Treaty rules instead pushed cruisers below 10,000 tons while allowing much larger battleships, leaving existing capacity underused. This mismatch shows how arms-control categories can clash with the physical plant that makes a fleet economical to maintain.
