Victory without immediate occupation

After Diu, Almeida accepted a trade agreement and factory because he judged immediate occupation and a permanent fortress too expensive.

Notes

Malik Ayyaz returned the prisoners from Chaul well clothed and fed, helping him negotiate with the victorious Portuguese. Francisco de Almeida accepted a trade agreement and factory but declined to occupy Diu because maintaining a permanent possession would be too expensive. His report to King Manuel argued that command of the sea mattered more than a fortress without sufficient maritime power. Ayyaz kept a Portuguese fortress out during his lifetime, and construction did not begin until 1535. The settlement connects combat success to the harder question of sustaining an overseas position.
