Diu was more than a fleet action between Portugal and a regional coalition. The battle helped shift long-distance commerce away from linked land-and-sea routes toward ships that could bypass traditional hubs. Egypt, Persia, Constantinople, Venice, and Genoa had prospered by connecting and taxing the older network. Control of ocean passages could therefore alter the fortunes of states far beyond the battlefield.
