Distributed energy and wartime resilience

Distributed renewable generation and centralized power stations face different risks under attack.

Notes

Energy security is framed as a strategic issue as well as an environmental policy. Recycling conserves finite material, while renewable generation and nuclear power reduce dependence on vulnerable fuel supplies. The offshore-wind example separates the vulnerability of one turbine from the resilience of the whole network. An attack might disable several turbines while leaving most of a large field operating, whereas the same strike against a centralized gas power station could remove far more capacity at once. Distributed generation therefore trades many exposed units for fewer single points of failure. The military lesson concerns the resilience of the whole system; individual turbines remain vulnerable.
