Distance, time, and force shape layered defense

A rule of thumb links warning distance and reaction time to the defensive firepower a ship needs in confined waters.

Notes

Early information gives defenders time to concentrate a smaller force; close, fast attacks demand much more immediately available firepower. The Italian Navy’s dense gun fit, especially the OTO Melara 76 mm, reflects the Mediterranean’s mix of open maneuver space and sudden littoral threats. Ships operating alone in confined waters need coverage across many angles instead of relying on one defensive system. This rule of thumb is deliberately approximate, but it clarifies why warning time and local weapon density must be considered together.
