Why published displacement figures mislead

Comparing a simulated heavy cruiser with a County class reveals how fuel, radar, sonar, and ammunition systems complicate simple displacement comparisons.

Notes

The proposed heavy cruiser is close to a County-class full-load displacement, but its extra weight includes fuel and equipment often omitted from headline figures. Radar, sonar, fire-control gear, ammunition handling, and electrically powered turrets all consume space and weight. The comparison therefore sets a historical hull benchmark against a fuller modernized equipment allowance. A quoted tonnage cannot by itself describe a warship's real operating fit.
