Disease finished the Jamaica campaign

The surviving French ships joined Spanish reinforcements, but epidemic losses destroyed the manpower needed to revive the invasion plan.

Notes

Twenty-six French ships reached Martinique and were joined by twelve Spanish ships, so the allied fleet still existed after the Saintes. The planned Jamaica expedition nevertheless depended on troops and sailors who could remain healthy in the Caribbean. Disease struck both groups and killed thousands. Counting surviving warships alone therefore exaggerates the fleet's remaining ability to continue the campaign.
