Laser power demands keep conventional guns relevant

Megawatt lasers and railguns create such large generation and recharge demands that future ships may need nuclear and gas-turbine power while still carrying conventional guns.

Notes

Capacitors do not remove the power-generation problem for lasers and railguns because they only store energy that the ship must replace. A heavily armed future ship might need nuclear power for its baseline load and gas turbines to supply rapid weapon demand. That machinery has to propel and operate the ship while it recharges the weapons. Conventional 76 mm guns and heavy machine guns may therefore remain valuable because they provide repeatable defence without the same electrical burden.
