In this account, Dieppe sought to secure a port and build a bridgehead within reach of British support across the Channel. Tanks did get off parts of the beach, but there was no route into the town and they returned to the shore. Their return helped create the impression that they had never left the beach. A sea wall too high to climb, a blocked slipway and the pebbles complicated movement.

Dieppe's port objective founders on routes off the beach
Dieppe is interpreted as an attempt to establish a supported port bridgehead, while blocked exits explain why some tanks returned to the beach.
