Diego Suarez as Operation Ironclad's decisive objective

The initial operation aimed to seize Diego Suarez and its airfield rather than conquer all of Madagascar at once.

Notes

Allied planners identified the northern port of Diego Suarez as the island's strategically decisive point. Its harbor and airfield were the facilities a hostile fleet or expeditionary force would need most. Holding that compact northern position would deny those assets to an enemy even while Vichy forces remained elsewhere on Madagascar. Churchill compared it to defending Portsmouth while an enemy held territory elsewhere in England. This limited objective made a rapid amphibious strike practical and left conquest of the rest of the island for later operations.
