Dido cruisers supporting a destroyer strike force

The 1942 Force K reversed the 1941 balance: destroyers led the attack while Dido cruisers supplied support and anti-aircraft weight.

Notes

The Didos were a difficult compromise between anti-aircraft cruiser, scout cruiser, and smaller protected-cruiser roles. Their 5.25-inch battery and heavy topweight were squeezed into a hull that was too short and narrow for everything demanded of it. A larger hull would have carried the weight more efficiently, but a compact ship could use more yards and harbours and allowed more vessels to be available. A frequent 1942 line-up paired Cleopatra, Dido, and Euryalus with Nubian, Paladin, Pakenham, and Petard, although ships rotated through the formation. The destroyers became the formation's offensive centre while the cruisers supplied support and anti-aircraft weight. Nubian's mixture of 4.7-inch guns, a replacement twin four-inch mounting, a quintuple torpedo launcher, lighter weapons, and radar shows the versatile striking power available to the destroyer-led group.
