Dewoitine D.371 and D.373 linked French carrier and Spanish fighter aviation

The Dewoitine fighter family connected France's early carrier-monoplane work with Republican aviation in the Spanish Civil War.

Notes

The D.371 family marked an early French move into monoplane fighters, with the naval D.373 variant serving aboard Béarn. Examples of the wider family were supplied unofficially to the Spanish Republic and remained in use until Soviet Polikarpov I-15 and I-16 fighters became available. A small number of the carrier variant were still aboard Béarn in 1939. The aircraft therefore links French carrier development with the rapid change in fighter standards visible during the Spanish Civil War.
