Deutschland narrowly avoided HMS Repulse early in the war

Weather and movement kept Deutschland and the battlecruiser Repulse apart, leaving a plausible counterfactual in which the North Atlantic campaign opened very differently.

Notes

Before being renamed Lützow, Deutschland had already operated in the North Atlantic at the beginning of the war. HMS Repulse came close enough for different weather or routing to have produced an encounter. A battlecruiser sinking the ship still carrying Germany's name would have transformed both the naval situation and the propaganda story of the war's opening. This is explicitly counterfactual, but it illustrates how chance movement and weather can redirect a campaign.
