Deutschland class: heavy guns, finite ammunition

The Deutschland design pairs formidable 11-inch guns with limited magazine volume, constraining a raider whose opponents can keep firing lighter weapons.

Notes

The Deutschland class is more complicated than a simple commerce-raider success or failure. Its 11-inch guns offer a major tactical advantage, but a hull of that size cannot carry unlimited large-calibre ammunition, and repeated simulations exhaust the supply before lighter opponents run short. Geography and crew quality could magnify a raider's effect beyond its paper characteristics without removing the magazine constraint. An alternative layout with the 11-inch battery forward and the 6-inch secondary turrets aft might have used the hull more effectively.
