Chapter · 0:41-2:16

Why deterrence needs a credible use doctrine

The Glorious Heritage class introduces a deterrence problem: destructive weapons carried without a believable policy for using them can signal weakness rather than strength.

Notes

The class provides a teaching example for strategic and nuclear deterrence. Its Nova Bomb is classed as a strategic deterrent, yet no doctrine or practice makes its employment credible. Because rival powers know about the omission, the weapon cannot impose a convincing ceiling on escalation. The force advertises extraordinary power while inviting opponents to doubt its political will.
