Destroyer forces and the fear of torpedo attack shaped the movement and organization of the fleets at Jutland. Later writing nevertheless gives far more attention to the forty-four dreadnoughts and fourteen battlecruisers than to the 139 destroyers and torpedo boats. That imbalance in coverage can hide how much small combatants influenced a major fleet action. By 1916, the destroyer represented roughly fifty years of development from the first self-propelled torpedo and its delivery problem. The type had come of age operationally even though it did not receive equivalent credit in the battle's popular history.
