Destroyers could provide more responsive shore fire than battleships

Troops often valued a destroyer's direct, readily available gunfire even though a battleship could deliver far heavier blows against selected targets.

Notes

Troops sometimes preferred destroyer fire support because it was available directly to them. A battleship's guns were shared with other formations and often assigned to strategic targets. The larger ship therefore offered much greater firepower without necessarily being the ship most readily available for a local request. When a battleship did answer, its destructive power could make that support especially welcome.
