Destroyers must defend the convoy

A destroyer action demonstrates the difference between chasing enemy warships and protecting the merchant vessels that make the mission matter.

Notes

The engagement is a clear example of mission priorities. The enemy destroyers concentrate on the attacking warships while their merchant ships remain exposed. The British objective is the reverse: deal with the escorts only as needed, then destroy the convoy. A tactical exchange between destroyers can become an operational failure when the shipping they were assigned to protect is lost.
