Destroyers as the safety net for fleet commanders

Well-trained general-purpose destroyers gave commanders the confidence to detach heavy ships while still protecting Arctic convoys.

Notes

The Barents Sea and North Cape actions illustrate why destroyers were more than torpedo platforms. Their training and aggression gave convoy commanders options against a stronger surface attacker, while their anti-submarine capability protected against a different threat. That general-purpose capacity let Fraser strip heavy units from a convoy screen without leaving the merchant ships entirely exposed. Destroyers therefore acted as an operational safety net that gave the fleet commander freedom to concentrate force and accept calculated risk. Savage's effective 4.5-inch weapons also offered evidence for the Battle class's chosen armament.
