The destroyers hidden behind capital-ship narratives

Destroyers supplied most of the hulls in major Mediterranean operations yet often disappear behind named battleships, cruisers, and carriers.

Notes

Researching the movements around Taranto made the prominent ships easy to identify, but a force of roughly thirty destroyers had to be reconstructed. Those destroyers represented nearly two-thirds of the participating hulls and carried much of the screening, escort, and routine operational burden. The Australian Scrap Iron Flotilla provides a memorable example of old ships whose service mattered far more than their nickname suggested. Counting only famous capital ships produces a distorted picture of how fleets actually operated.
