Competition between turbine makers let the Navy develop machinery while acquiring useful destroyers. One interpretation is that these small ships provided a relatively inexpensive way to advance technology for cruisers, battleships and battlecruisers. That did not make a battleship installation a direct enlargement of a destroyer's machinery. Different pressures, wear and operating demands complicated the transfer. The engineering principles could still inform later development on a larger scale.

How destroyer turbine trials could benefit larger warships
Destroyers offered relatively inexpensive machinery trials, although battleships placed different demands on the technology.
