Early destroyers were much faster than the battle fleets they accompanied. That speed let them circle the formation, intercept hostile torpedo craft, and recover position after an engagement. It also allowed them to overtake an enemy line and deliver their own torpedoes rather than serving only as defensive escorts. The same machinery and hull therefore supported both fleet protection and offensive action.
