Why screening defines the destroyer

The ideal destroyer changes by era, while the job of screening fleets and task groups stays central.

Notes

Destroyers change as weapons and fleets change, so the ideal design belongs to a particular era. Screening remains the constant: protecting fleets, task groups, and individual ships against threats of very different sizes. That role combines defense with attack. An escort must be able to stop a threat before it reaches the force under protection.
