Destroyers remain trapped between glamorous capital ships and fast torpedo boats in the regime's competition for prestige. Standardisation can make the ships and their support more consistent, but it does not automatically redirect funding toward them. The later replacement of destroyer names with numbers also shows a damaging institutional disregard for crew identity and morale. The result is a force treated as elite without receiving the resources or personnel policy needed to sustain that status.

Why Germany still lacks enough destroyers
Standardized destroyers improve force generation, but prestige politics still deny the Kriegsmarine the numbers its Baltic and fleet missions require.
