Removing destroyer names carried a morale cost

Replacing names with impersonal Z numbers weakened crew identity and put political image ahead of sailors' morale.

Notes

A ship's name forms part of its crew's institutional identity. The loss of a named destroyer carries public and emotional meaning that a number such as Z39 does not convey as readily. Removing names may protect national image by making losses easier to forget. It can also tell sailors that their individual ship and survival matter less. Administrative choices over warship naming can therefore shape morale inside a fighting service.
