The Marksman ships developed from British experience with Swift and ships intended for South American customers, particularly Chile. Their design suited Royal Navy requirements, but several left service by the end of 1921. Abdiel and Nimrod were longer-lived exceptions. Retaining useful ships saved the effort needed to replace them, although the class as a whole had a short postwar career.
