The Faulknor ships originated in the Chilean Almirante Lynch programme and were built by J. S. White at Cowes. They combined roughly 1,400 tons standard displacement with 31-knot speed, six single 4-inch guns and two twin 21-inch torpedo mountings. The stated endurance is 4,200 nautical miles at 15 knots, with 160 crew. Two of the six completed ships reached Chile before the war, while the four remaining in Britain were used as flotilla leaders. The foreign order offered a practical example for Britain to examine when seeking support for leaders of its own.
