Gorshkov's first destroyer connected Imperial and Soviet fleets

His first posting was aboard Frunze, a raised and renamed Imperial-era destroyer whose history reflected the material and symbolic breaks of revolution.

Notes

Gorshkov graduated into the Black Sea Fleet aboard the destroyer Frunze, originally the Imperial Russian Bystry. The ship passed through British custody and scuttling in 1919, Soviet recovery in 1922, and renaming for revolutionary commander Mikhail Frunze. The discussion of Frunze's contested 1925 death shows how naval naming embedded the new regime's heroes and political uncertainties in inherited hulls. Gorshkov's first assignment is a compact example of how the early Soviet Navy reused Imperial matériel while rebuilding its institutional identity.
