Destroyer flotillas as a leadership school

The flotillas connected with Pathfinder and Patrol concentrated aggressive officers and kept combat skills sharp while cruisers carried many of the Royal Navy's peacetime duties.

Notes

The flotillas connected with Pathfinder and Patrol included aggressive officers such as Robert Arbuthnot and, in a later generation, Andrew Cunningham. Patrol served as Arbuthnot's flagship because he valued her as a flotilla leader. Destroyer duty concentrated officers chosen for initiative and combat readiness, while cruisers handled many of the Royal Navy's imperial and diplomatic peacetime duties. That division kept fighting skills sharp but made the transition between specialist command cultures harder. Arbuthnot's death at Jutland also raises the institutional problem behind this discussion: navies need aggression in junior commands without letting it crowd out judgement at higher rank.
