A modern destroyer command is usually a captain's post. In an interwar Royal Navy flotilla, however, most individual destroyers could be commanded by lieutenant commanders. A formation of eight or nine ships normally placed a full captain in the leader as flotilla commander. Several senior subordinate ships might have commanders, with the remaining destroyers led by lieutenant commanders. Tribal and other flotillas varied, but the pattern shows how rank, flagship status, and tactical responsibility changed across time and within the same formation.
