The Despenser crisis rebuilds a baronial coalition

In 1321, hostility to Hugh Despenser the Elder and Younger pulled Warenne and other royal loyalists into negotiations that forced Edward II to accept their exile.

Notes

The Marcher lords advanced on London after organizing with Lancaster, while Warenne, Pembroke, and Arundel initially remained among the earls loyal to the king. Pembroke warned Edward II that continued refusal could cost him the throne and his nobles' homage. The coalition then drew Warenne and the other loyalists into the demand, producing the Despensers' permanent exile and disinheritance in Parliament. The same magnates changed alignments again when royal favoritism threatened political stability.
