Fifteen-inch guns as a fleet-battle trigger

Their guns were meant to make lighter opponents avoid battle and oblige Germany to answer with major ships.

Notes

The 15-inch armament functioned as a strategic lever rather than simply a prestige choice. A cruiser could not comfortably contest it, while the German battle fleet would have to intervene to remove the threat. Multiple 4-inch weapons gave the ships a separate answer to destroyers, while speed and shallow draft supported withdrawal through restricted waters. The design sought to create a threat Germany could neither ignore nor cheaply counter.
