Design slack makes warships easier to modernize

Generous, flexible internal volume can outlast a tightly optimized layout when aircraft, technology, and missions change unexpectedly.

Notes

A design optimized around one precise forecast can become expensive to adapt when aircraft develop differently. One proposed improvement to PA9 is to provide three equally sized, flexible hangar spaces, each able to take any of the aircraft types. Assigning one to fighters would then be an operational choice that could change without reconstructing the ship. Large open hangars can look old-fashioned beside tightly specialized arrangements, yet Ark Royal's generous spaces underpin the retrospective argument that she would have been promising for postwar jet conversion had she survived. Spare capacity also matters across the fleet, where sufficient ship numbers leave room to adapt. Space and capacity retained at the design stage can reduce later alteration costs and extend useful service.
