Why Germany kept building torpedo boats

Germany's coastal, divisional, and ocean-going boats reveal how operational needs and funding politics kept the torpedo-boat concept alive.

Notes

Germany's attachment to torpedo boats developed through coastal, divisional, and larger fleet craft, with several reasons for retaining the concept. Gröner's two-volume reference supplies the broad account of German ship designs used here. Alex Clarke recommends it while disagreeing with some interpretations: historians can accept the same facts and weigh their significance differently. His approach gives particular weight to engineering choices and actual expenditure, which record what a navy committed resources to building. Official explanations can contain part of the truth while leaving other motives unstated.
