Chapter ยท 1:08:19-1:11:55

Build carrier forces from missions, alliances, and slack

Carrier and air-group design should begin with missions and readiness needs rather than a platform shopping list or a permanently assembled peacetime task group.

Notes

The closing exercise asks viewers to identify a nation's actual defence need before choosing a carrier or another platform. Platform selection should follow the mission instead of becoming a shopping list detached from national strategy. A navy can maintain the core of a peacetime carrier group while planning for patrol vessels and allies to reinforce it in war. Air forces likewise gain surge resilience from larger common fleets because maintenance and training disruption is spread across more aircraft. Every service needs spare capacity so unforeseen crises do not consume the entire trained and maintained force.
