Judge a cruiser by the role it was built to perform

A ship comparison only becomes meaningful after asking whether each design suited its intended fleet role.

Notes

The video rejects treating warships as a simple ranking of guns, speed, and armour. American and British cruisers could look comparable while being built for different operational systems. Pensacola therefore has to be evaluated against the scouting and fleet-support jobs the US Navy expected it to perform. That role-first test explains why a technically impressive feature can still be a poor trade if it does not help the ship do its assigned work.
