After returning from East Asia, Descartes served with the North Atlantic station and then spent more than two years in reserve. Her next Far Eastern deployment included destroyers and torpedo boats, followed by a Nanking visit in company with the Italian cruiser Calabria and a German gunboat. She later moved through Madagascar, the Mediterranean gunnery school, Newfoundland, and the Caribbean. A ship nominally designed against rival fleets thus spent much of its career operating beside them in diplomacy, training, and colonial patrol work.
