Denmark was heavily outnumbered in the Second Schleswig War. One proposed response was a large militia or home-guard system able to mobilize local resistance. Experienced veterans distributed around the country could have organized younger defenders and made roads, river crossings, and bridges difficult to use. Such delaying actions would not erase the numerical imbalance, but they might buy time and complicate Prussian-Austrian command. Danmark's late arrival also shows how difficult it was to match scarce Danish resources to national defence against a much larger coalition.

Militia and delay in Denmark's outnumbered 1864 war
The closing proposal considers whether a militia-based Home Guard could have delayed a much larger Prussian-Austrian invasion by obstructing roads and crossings.
