How would German torpedo boats and British destroyer escorts change the Denmark Strait action?
Short answerThey would probably delay the battle until the British could concentrate a stronger screened force.
NotesHood and Prince of Wales had destroyers, but the escorts fell behind in difficult waters while Tribal crews believed they could have kept pace. Their absence was not evidence that the British force normally operated without screening ships. If Bismarck also had torpedo craft, Admiral Holland would have a stronger reason to wait for British destroyers and cruisers before closing. The Denmark Strait engagement would therefore probably occur later on 25 May with more ships present on both sides, changing the tactical problem without guaranteeing a different result.
