Why Denmark Strait was a constrained choice, not a blunder

The Royal Navy's two hunting groups reflect geography, carrier protection, and the limited capital ships available rather than careless planning.

Notes

Hood's overdue modernization reflected the prewar expectation that major refits could continue toward 1942, not ignorance of the ship's weaknesses. Once Bismarck sailed, concentrating every heavy unit in one formation would have reduced ocean coverage and slowed interception. Pairing Hood with the working-up Prince of Wales while King George V remained with the reconnaissance value of Victorious was imperfect, but it balanced carrier safety, scouting, and response time. Hood's fatal hit does not by itself turn that constrained force allocation into irrational planning.
