Why political deliberation is a safeguard

Democratic debate can slow government decisions, but it also exposes bad options and allows policies to be corrected.

Notes

The Chilean crisis opens a wider discussion of the complaint that democratic systems react too slowly. Debate and institutional checks let multiple voices test whether a proposed solution is sound. A dictatorship may announce decisions faster, but speed does not prove effectiveness, especially when dissenters cannot expose implementation failures. Without criticism, leaders have less information for refining policy and stronger incentives to double down rather than admit error. Constitutional procedure therefore supports institutional learning and better wartime decisions.
